Grow Light Calculator — Advanced PPFD Grid, DLI & Crop Optimizer
Science-grade grow light analysis for hydroponic growers
Accurate light optimisation is critical in hydroponic systems — even small PPFD imbalances reduce yield and quality across your entire canopy. This advanced grow light calculator combines a real 9×9 photon grid model with 44 crop-specific DLI targets to deliver science-grade lighting analysis. Whether you're growing leafy greens, herbs, or fruiting crops, get instant results across six key metrics:
- PPFD Grid Engine — real 9×9 canopy light map using physics-based cosine irradiance modelling
- DLI Targets — daily light integral calculated against crop and growth-stage specific optima
- Uniformity Score — ASABE S640 standard Umin/Uavg ratio across all 81 grid points
- Crop Optimizer — suitability scoring across 44 crops with PPFD, DLI and photoperiod matching
- Energy Cost Projection — daily, monthly and annual electricity costs plus cost per mol of light
- Commercial Score — overall grow performance index across efficacy, uniformity, coverage and cost

What Is PPFD?
PPFD (Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density) measures the number of photosynthetically active photons (400–700 nm) hitting a surface area per second, expressed in μmol/m²/s. It is the most precise metric for describing how much usable light your plants actually receive at canopy level, accounting for light intensity rather than just lamp output.
What Is DLI?
DLI (Daily Light Integral) is the cumulative amount of PAR photons delivered to a plant over a full day, measured in mol/m²/day. It combines both light intensity (PPFD) and duration (photoperiod). DLI is arguably more important than instantaneous PPFD for planning long-term plant health, yield potential, and quality across growth stages.
How To Improve Light Efficiency?
Key strategies include: using highly reflective grow room surfaces (Mylar achieves ~97% reflectivity), maintaining optimal mounting height to balance uniformity vs. intensity, selecting high-efficacy fixtures (≥2.8 μmol/J), avoiding light spill outside the grow area, and matching photoperiod to the crop's specific DLI requirement rather than running lights unnecessarily long.
Recommended PPFD Levels By Crop
| Crop | PPFD (μmol/m²/s) | DLI Target |
|---|---|---|
| Lettuce | 150 – 300 | 12–17 mol/m²/d |
| Basil / Herbs | 200 – 400 | 14–20 mol/m²/d |
| Spinach / Kale | 150 – 350 | 12–18 mol/m²/d |
| Tomato (Veg) | 400 – 600 | 20–30 mol/m²/d |
| Tomato (Flower) | 600 – 900 | 25–35 mol/m²/d |
| Cannabis (Veg) | 400 – 600 | 18–25 mol/m²/d |
| Cannabis (Flower) | 800 – 1200 | 35–65 mol/m²/d |
| Strawberry | 300 – 500 | 16–25 mol/m²/d |
